How many times have we heard or know of someone who is unemployed and currently looking for a job. With so many out of work today, the competition in the job market can be very discouraging and at times impossible. It seems as though the longer you are out of work, the harder it becomes to get a job. This may not be just an opinion or theory because an employer recently said that he doesn't want to hire people that have been out of work for over a year, assuming that they could have taken a job or any job by that time, thinking that maybe the job seeker really doesn't want to work and would rather receive unemployment. Yet, there are some things you can do to become a more effective job seeker, which I will now discuss.
1. Be Organized. Set daily goals and record what you have done. Start your day by being dressed for work which will give you added confidence even when talking on the telephone, possibly for a potential interview. Obtain the addresses and phone numbers of prospective employers from the employment office. Respond to newspaper ads. Research businesses in the phone book and make lists of companies that might have jobs that were not yet advertised and contact them. Compile a resume and send it to them.
2. Hidden Job Market. Set aside time each week to call on businesses that you think may have jobs, you can do. If they respond that they have no work, ask him if he knows where else you might look and specifically to whom you should speak. If he or she knows of someone, make an appointment with that company, stating the name of the person who referred you. Ask your friends, family, or other associates to help you access the hidden job market and let them know you are looking for work.
3. Be Adaptable. Look for jobs outside of your profession or training. If they have on the job training or require little experience try applying for these. Remember you could also go to school for a trade and get grants from the government, which could lead to employment. If necessary consider menial work, such as cleaning or personal care.
4. Effective Resume. Include your full name, address, phone number, and e-mail address. When stating your objective, list your education you have received, highlighting any training and skills that relate to the job you are seeking. Give details of previous work experience. Include not only your work responsibilities but also examples of goals you reached as well as the benefits you brought to your previous employers. Include your qualities, interests, and hobbies, especially if they are relevant to the position you are applying for. Because companies needs differ, you may have to adjust your resume for each application. Writing a resume helps you to organize your thoughts and goals. It also builds your confidence by helping you to prepare for potential questions you may be asked during a job interview.
5. Interviews. Research the company that you are looking to work for. The more you know about the company, the better the impression you will make during the interview. Your research will also help you determine whether the company really has the kind of work you want or is one you want to work for. Wear appropriate, neat, clean clothing. This will tell the prospective employer that you take pride in yourself and are thus more likely to take pride in your work. If possible, choose your wardrobe prior to the interview to minimize stress and to avoid feeling rushed. Try to arrive 15 minutes early for your interview. Don't arrive too early and if possible avoid arriving late, it will leave a negative impression. Smile and give a firm handshake when you meet your potential employer. Try not to fidget, slouch, be too informal, overly talkative, or use profanity. Avoid being negative about your former employer or workmates because the interviewer may assume that you will be negative about this job also. Have good eye contact, use natural gestures and be honest when answering questions.
If for whatever reason, you don't obtain an interview try this suggestion. Leave a small card that contains your name, address, phone number, and e-mail address as well as a brief summary of your skills and accomplishments. Distribute this to any who might help you find work and encourage them to pass it along to potential employers.
